Restore MS Exchange Server data.

Following are the steps recommended to restore MS Exchange 2000, 2003 on Windows 2000 Advanced Server and Windows 2003 server.

Please note that restoration of data should be done by qualified technical persons. The following mandatory steps have to be performed before initiating the MS Exchange Server Restore operation.

 


Step 1

Start the MS Exchange System Manager from Start > Programs > Microsoft Exchange > System Manager.

Step 2

Right click on the ‘Public Folder’ store/ ‘Mailbox’ store that you need to restore and choose the ‘Dismount Store’ option.

Step 3

Right click on the ‘Public Folder’ store/ Mailbox’ store next and choose the ‘Properties’ option.

Step 4

Select 'Database' tab from 'Properties' and then enable the option 'This database can be overwritten by a restore'. Now, click 'Apply' followed by the 'OK' button to confirm the operation.

Perform the steps 3 and 4 listed above for all the databases that need to be restored.

Note: Once the above mentioned steps have been performed, it is recommended to close the ‘ MS Exchange System Manager’ before initiating the restore operation.

Please note that the restore operation will overwrite the existing databases on the MS Exchange Server.

We strongly recommend you to take offline backup of MS Exchange Server databases that you need to restore before initiating the restore operation.

 


Restoring the MS Exchange Server database using IBackup for Windows

Once the databases have been dismounted, login to the IBackup for Windows application. Users may access the ‘Exchange Server Restore’ option from the main menu item: Advanced Backup > Exchange Server > ‘Exchange Server Restore’.IBackup for Windows provides two options to restore the ‘Public Folder’ store and the ‘Mailbox’ stores (Storage Groups/ Databases) into your MS Exchange Server.

Option 1: Restore the MS Exchange Server databases backup from your IBackup account to the MS Exchange Server database.

Option 2: Restore the MS Exchange Server databases backup from your ‘Local Computer’ to the MS Exchange Server database.

 

 

 


Option 1

Step 1

Select the IBackup for Windows Exchange Backup folder ‘IBackupExchBackupset’ from your IBackup account. Please note, even if you have to restore a single ‘Public Folder’ store and the ‘Mailbox’ stores (Storage Groups/ Databases), you must restore the complete Exchange Backup folder named 'IBackupExchBackupset' from your IBackup account.


Step 2

Select a directory under ‘My Computer’ as a destination to restore the Exchange Backup folder ‘IBackupExchBackupset’. Click on the ‘Next’ button to navigate to the ‘Restore Wizard Confirmation’ screen.

Step 3

Click on the ‘Restore’ button available on the ‘Restore Wizard Confirmation’ screen to begin the restore of the Exchange Backup folder named ‘IBackupExchBackupset’ onto your local computer.

Step 4

After restoring the Exchange Backup folder ‘IBackupExchBackupset’ onto your local computer, the following ‘Exchange Server Restore’ screen would be displayed.

Here, the user has to click on the ‘Browse’ button to select the temporary location. The temporary location is used to hold the MS Exchange Server related files to run the ‘Hard Recovery’.

Now, select the required databases and click on the ‘Restore’ button to initiate the MS Exchange Server restore operation. The restore process (restore from ‘Local Computer’ to ‘MS Exchange Server’) will take some time (depending upon your restore file size).

During this process it is recommended not to interrupt the operation.

Please note that after a successful completion of MS Exchange Server restore, the restored databases (the ‘Public Folder’ store/ Mailbox’ stores) would be automatically mounted onto the MS Exchange System Manager.

 


Option 2

Restore the MS Exchange Server databases backup from your ‘Local Computer’ to the MS Exchange Server.

Users may access the ‘Exchange Server Restore’ option from the main menu item: Advanced Backup > Exchange Server >’Exchange Server Restore’.

Step 1

Select the option ‘Restore Exchange Server database backup from your ‘Local Computer’ to the MS Exchange Server'.
Click on the ‘Next >’ button to access the ‘Exchange Server Restore’ screen.

Step 2

Click on the ‘Browse’ button to select the IBackup for Windows Exchange Backup folder named ‘IBackupExchBackupset’ from your Local Computer (the location where the Exchange Server backup folder ‘IBackupExchBackupset’ was restored earlier from your IBackup account).

Now, select the temporary location by clicking on the ‘Browse’ button. The MS Exchange Server related files are stored in the temporary location, which are used to run the ‘Hard Recovery’ during the restore operation.

Now, select the required databases and click on the ‘Restore’ button to initiate the MS Exchange Server restore operation. The restore process (restore from the ‘Local Computer’ to the ‘MS Exchange Server’) will take sometime (depending upon your restore file size).

During this process it is recommended not to interrupt the operation.

Please note that after a successful completion of MS Exchange Server restore, the restored databases (the ‘Public Folder’ store/ Mailbox’ stores) would be automatically mounted on the MS Exchange System Manager.
