IBackup Workgroup and Economy subscription accounts, including Sub-Accounts are FTP ready. They are compatible with most FTP clients on most platforms providing a powerful flexible tool to transfer files. IBackup's FTP server even supports full 128 bit SSL encryption.

Please note that setting the transfer type to 'Passive Mode' usually helps to access through proxy servers and some firewall configurations.

For the Windows Platform, Two of the most widely used FTP client programs are WS_FTP and CuteFTP. With these, you can transfer files both ways fast, have scripting ability, synchronize and search/find files.

For the Macintosh platform, suggested FTP clients are Fetch and Transmit.

For the Linux platform, suggested FTP client is gFTP.

For the Windows CE platform, suggested FTP client is Scotty FTP. This has been tested to work very well on the Windows CE based handheld computers such as iPaq and the HP Jornada.

What are the security implications of using FTP based access?

FTP in its basic form is unsecure. User authentication including Password and data information is sent in clear that may let anyone snooping on the network using network sniffers or similar tools to read the information. If you are transferring sensitive information, or if you do not want to allow any possible security breaches, do not use FTP based access. Another possible issue is the password size limitation, FTP access validates the first 8 characters of the password. IBackup generally discourages use of FTP method of transfer for most users.

How do I connect to IBackup using FTP with SSL encryption?

IBackup's FTP Server supports implicit SSL connection at port 990 as well as explicit SSL at port 27. Popular FTP clients with SSL options that have been tested to work well with IBackup include CuteFTPPro and WS_FTPPro. Please note that SSL connections are supported for PASSIVE mode of transmission.

For CuteFTPPro, Please make sure you have the connection type set to Implicit SSL and set a value of 50000 KB or higher for use of the same session to transfer files in 'Transfer Settings'. This will help in reliable transfers even for slower connections. You can also choose Explicit SSL connection and set the port to 27.

For WS_FTPPro, please make sure you have SSL option checked, and set the port to 27. You may be prompted to trust the SSL certificate. Please do so for successful FTP access using SSL.
